Clowning around

I started out posting pictures of Australia, but then I got distracted by something shiny. I may or may not be willing to confirm that it was a ball of tinfoil.

Angels, tangs and wrasses

I got into the hobby in 2001 when I set up my first tank. It was an 8 gallon eclipse with a bio wheel, 12 lbs of live rock, some snails and a clownfish. At first, I was content; I got to try out a salt water aquarium, the clownfish was beautiful and it was a new world with much to learn.

Then I went snorkeling in Hawaii. There was so much more. It was like being introduced to a new world. I swam through a cloud of yellow tangs at Hanauma Bay and I was changed. The beauty of the deep had swept me away into a wave swept reef. To remind me of that trip, every tank has to have a yellow tang.

While a buddy of mine’s cruising the Great Barrier reef, the rest of us are at our desks dreaming of azure water and post-dive naps.

So when I saw this picture this morning, I was transported somewhere wonderful. I picture myself somewhere on an uninhabited island, hot sand between my toes getting ready for another dive. As I slipped into the pristine water, I’d lick the brine from my lips, put my mask and regulator on. I’d feel the pressure of the water around me like a warm hug from the ocean and I’d disappear into a cloud of colourful fish.

Seems to be doing well and has a healthy appetite.

Speaking of appetites, these pictures gave me a serious case of wanderlust. I don’t know who the people are, but man I can’t wait to go to Fiji.

Acan land

Here’s a few pictures of one of the best Acan focused tanks I’ve ever seen. It’s a beautiful tank and no expense has been spared in terms of equipment or livestock. I visited his tank a few weeks back and snapped some photos. His SPS is still quite young, but the Acans are the real story here. Probably one of the best Acan collections in Canada.

Here are his specs: 120 Gallon, Sfiligoi light 1x400x 20,000k, 4×29 T5s. Skimmer is a mini Bubble King 200, MAS calcium reactor, Tunze power heads on a controller and a 1/4HP chiller.

The Anthia kept posing, so I had to get a few shots.

And of course the life support for the tank. That skimmer was a beast.

Aquarists Online is offering an online course in aquarium photography.

I picked up my Canon Rebel XTi about 18 months ago and I’ve been dabbling with pictures for a while now. I’ve gotten some decent pictures, but nothing really stunning. But, a course dedicated to teaching me how to get stunning pictures specifically for my aquarium? Awesome.

I’m put off by the price a bit. $95 for an online course seems steep to me. I’ll give it some thought.

Well, its Friday and a day before a crazy morning at a LFS. So, today is a day of mellowing out and relaxation. Some of you may be near your tank, admiring the fruits of your hard work. Some of you are shuffling through your latest dive trip’s photos, remembering how you ‘LOVED IT’. On a gloomy Friday, I like to sit back, slurp my Coffee Frappuccino from Starbucks, and enjoy looking at some stunning underwater photography.
