The colour of envy is…blue?

My friend just got back from a trip to Australia which, because he’s a reefer, included a trip to the Great Barrier Reef.

I’m going to post a few pictures each day over the next few days that will highlight his trip. Today I’ll start with coral.

This typing thing is for the for the birds. Let’s get to the good stuff.

Amadee Coral Reef New Caledonia in New Caledonia

It’s still below freezing in Toronto today, s0 this is a welcome respite. Panaramic cameras were invented to take pictures of the reef. Here’s one of the best reef photos I’ve ever seen. It almost feels like you’re floating above the coral feeling the fish flick by you.

How many species of fish can you identify? I count only 5, but I’m not a fish guy. That’s Vlad’s territory.

Spectacular photos of a sailfish attacking a school of sardines. A few sailfish will simultaneously attack the school ensuring everyone is fed.

How have I not heard about Poppe Images until now? Description from the site:

Has the aim to document a maximum of the Marine Life in the Philippines. During the expeditions of Guphil I, Guido & Philippe Poppe started photographing systematically all marine creatures. This resulted in a fast growing library of documented digital pictures which is obviously important for many people such as zoologists, museologists, divers, photographers, and others.

Be sure to check out the ‘best of‘ page. Most of the pictures are stunning.

I love that each picture comes with a description of where the specimen was found. Awesome for helping to figure placement in your tank.
