Let us bring you a scary story, discovered on Reef Central. It clearly demonstrates what GFCI protected circuit is for your equipment and for your health.
Reefski, a 5 year veteran on RC with a 700 gallon system, got a shrieking call from his wife about an emergency with his tank. What was his emergency?
the tank is 1/3 empty. the CL pump just under the tank had broken a seal and was leaking water, about 300 gallons total
300 gallons on the floor! How many people even have 300 gallons in total?
i shut off the valves at either side of the pump and stopped the leak. unfortunately a power strip under the tank got soaked but fortunately the GFI tripped on that strip. that shut off the return pump and stopped the sumps from emptying any more.
Imagine if you were walking around when this happened and the circuit wasn’t on a GFCI? We can’t either!
A lesson to all, every single piece of equipment should be on a GFCI protected circuit. Do not play with your life! Water and electricity do not mix well. At least I have been told, by a seasoned and zapped reefer!
Happy reefing ya’ll!
