The acronym speaks directly to the hearts of coral collectors world wide. Its an acronym that was used on a single coral and made it legendary. Your eyes pop when you read anywhere about the Purple People Eaters. I don’t even need to tell you what coral classification it may be or its species. It is so well known and sought after, that a single polyp can fetch upwards of 100$. Yes, that rare and that slow growing.
Now there are those who try to sell clones of these corals, but you need a trained eye. You see PPEs have a deep rich purple center, with a almost radiating neon green skirt.
The biggest problem with these guys is their growth rate. Slow, as in a grandma walking across a large intersection slow. But, I do not think this should be a deterrent in collecting something truly rare and beautiful. Patience is the essence of this hobby.
These palys were discovered by Blaine Prerun in 2001. HEre is a little hitsory on this coral, written by Blaine:
I obtained this colony by chance in or around 2001. In addition I have a matching zoanthids colony, as to where I believe this to be Palythoa or Protopalythoa. After about 1 year the specimen began coloring up and I sold off about 15 fragments for $25-$35 bucks each, ironically most of these people complained about the piece when they got it. The colony at that time still was not mature, not reaching it’s full beauty. The following year I sold propagation’s for about $40 bucks and people were outraged, So I stopped but soon saw them selling on ebay for about $200.
Until next time reefers of the world!
