We are unfortunate to bring you these news from Australia. It seems that a Chinese registered oil tanker Sheng Neng 1 slammed into the Douglas Shoal in Australias waters. The tanker was beaten up to the point where it was breaking apart. Tugboats were sent to minimize the damage caused by the impact. Apparently 2 metric tonnes of oil have already spilled into the ocean, and sadly more is to come. This CTV article explains more:
About 2 metric tons of oil have already spilled from the 950 metric tons of fuel on board, creating a 100-metre slick that stretches 3 kilometres, Marine Safety Queensland said in a statement.
Queensland State Premier Anna Bligh said a boom will be put around the ship by Tuesday to contain oil leaking from the hull. Aircraft sprayed chemical dispersants in an effort to break up the slick Sunday
The ship’s owner, Shenzhen Energy, a subsidiary of the Cosco Group that is China’s largest shipping operator, could be fined up to 1 million Australian dollars (US$920,000) for straying from a shipping lane used by 6,000 cargo vessels each year.

“could be fined up to a million dollars AU” is nothing to China’s largest shipping operator.. The cost to the Great Barrier Reef will take a life time (maybe many life times) to right itself of this damage. heart breaking
It is. I hope they minimize the damaged caused by the oil. The oil blocks the light from entering the water surface (amongs other things). I hope they can somehow dilute/neutralize the spill.

Now 5 million, sounds a bit more realistic.
