I haven’t meet a reefer who wouldn’t like to get their hands on a Hanna Phosphate Colorimeter, but with the steep price of $250 USD most haven’t. Since titration test kits just don’t cut it at the low levels of phosphate we maintain in our reefs, many people just don’t measure this parameter. Enter Hanna with their new Checker line of colorimeters, including the new phosphate model.
The HANNA HI 713 Checker®HC bridges the gap between simple chemical test kits and professional instrumentation. Chemical test kits are not very accurate and only give 5 to 10 points resolution while professional instrumentation can cost hundreds of dollars and can be time consuming to calibrate and maintain. The HANNA HI 713 Checker®HC is accurate and affordable.
Read more about it here.
The one flaw I see is that the precision of this meter (0.04 ppm) is under the upper limit we aim for with our reefs (0.03 ppm), however this precision is the same as the much more expensive model, and for that Hanna should be applauded. Check back for a write up once I receive my HI 713 and investigate its usefulness in the reef keeping application.

Hi All,
This seems like a fantastic new product out on the market….however I must concur with Mike in regards to the price point being steep.
Just curious does anyone around here own the more expensive model of the Hanna Phosphate probe…..if so what are there experiences with this tool and what is the price tag on it?
Patrick
The older/larger/more expensive one is around $250 shipped. I ordered the new one for around $50 (shipped).
Good news mike. keep us updated on the use fullness. $50 is a steal for a p04 colorimeter. Where did you order it?
I ordered straight from Hanna (the link provided). There is a vendor on the Canreef form also organizing a group buy. I haven’t herd of any Vendors in the GTA putting anything together yet.
Hey Mike…..did you order regents with it. Apparently none are included.
Mike is in Vegas right now, and will be back on the weekend.
Darryl, from the website I ordered from it looked like some where included. Either way I did order some additional packets also.
