Now don’t think we are being negative again, because we are not. It is just that I found this great thread at CanReef.com which tells the tales of many who have been duped by local fish store owners into buying needless items for their reef. So lets share a good laugh, or a serious ‘Oooh’ while reading some of these stories:
- I once had a live fish store sell me 15 red legged hermits and 1 large “Filter feeding crab”. The guy placed them all in the same bag and said I would be good to go. By the time I got home the so called “filter feeding crab” had broken open and eaten 12/15 of the red legged. In the end though there loss, no repeat business on my behalf.
Levi - My favorite is the LFS who told my wife that she would be overdriving the t5 bulbs with the light fixture he was trying to sell her but it was not electrically possible, but little did he know that she already knew what she wanted researched it and knew he was full of it. If that wasn’t enough she called me and asked. Powertec
- My sister when she began, got swindled into buying a compact for $500 saying its the best thing in the market, few months down the line they stopped carrying the product. I was pretty upset for the money she spent on something crappy like that. Littlefish88
- For example I was helping my husband do some construction work for this one lady. She showed me her tank and proceeded to tell me how the LFS sold her a coralife t5 light with only one bulb (worth $50-$150 max) and 2 small in tank fluval filters (worth $40-$60 max each) for $1000 saying that was enough light for coral and told her she had to do 100% water changes every week. They also told her a seahorse would do fine in her 13g, 3″ wide tank. Lying is one thing but this took it to a whole new level. There are lies and then there is getting completely hosed. zoeElite
So what are your stories of getting lied to in a local fish store? What are your noobie experiences?

I was told by a LFS that a Spotted Sweetlips would be perfect for my 24-gallon nano.
Went to the local “Big Box” chain store to get a 24″ T5 light fixture for my fuge. Being a fuge noob at the time I made the honest mistake of asking which fixture I should buy (as they came with bulbs). “Should I buy the one with 1 daylight and 1 actinic or 2 daylight?” This fellow, who i’ve seen working in the store for a number of years, sternly shouted from 20 feet away that if I wanted to grow SW algae I needed SW lights meaning the fixture with the actinic. Needless to say my fuge grew like shit and did nothing to help with night time PH drop. Luckily the original bulbs burned out and I replaced them with a 6500/10K combo which has yielded the desire effect. Did I get hosed? Not really, buddy just thinks he’s smarter than he really is (common thing these days).
Well at least he didn’t suggest a bamboo shark.
I think a lot of people are getting ripped off when shopping for equipment.
The first shrimp recommend for my REEF TAMK was a camel back shrimp from the same said box store. I’ve learned a lot since then, Mostly that camel back shrimp are hard to catch when your mad, because they eat your coral. lol.
So many time I hear bad advice given at the store.
Yeah, camels are back for your reef. Unless you have a dragon wrasse to help
