May seemed to be one with a lot of winding down. Local fish stores are reducing their working hours, shipments are too few and spread out, and online coral sales are in hiatus mode. But, judging from the types of corals that were recently brought in, I can clearly state that Yuma mushrooms are on the way in. Its the beginning of their two year cycle. While down south, LPS corals specifically Echinophyllias, are still the rage. So lets look at what are hot in corals for May:

CANADA:

Ricordia yuma

Yumas are making their cyclical comeback, a la Eminem. Very hard to keep for novices, and some intermediate reefers. Once established, they can multiply quite quickly. Just ask me how mine are doing.

United States:

Echinophyllia (Chalice Coral)

Frags are still selling for hundreds of dollars. I can see it now, two years from now, chalice frags going for 10$ a piece. Actually, here in Canada, we can obtain these echinophyllias for 20-50$ (for a colony that’s 6″x8″ big). Its all relative folks! What is the next hot coral?
