Now that we are back to our scheduled programming, after some big news/allegations in our reefing world, I wanted to touch base with something that is obviously current and that will affect all of us in some way.
As the World Recession is upon us, many people associated with this hobby are scrambling in contingencies to make things work. As I frequent many reefing forums, I can see the signs of retailers feeling the pressure of staying open for business. Some of the topics that are started are: “Would you change your spending habits?”, or “How are you feeling the pinch?”, to even more striking “Should you stay open?”. So should you?
As a business owner, you should find any means necessary to aleviate your costs. You must find your most significant costs, and try to cut them without compromising a lot. You may want to consider changing your light setup, or light schedule. I know charging more for your stock is an option, but during these times, people are unwilling to shell out more for yesterday’s stock. Indeed, it is tough. And shipments are not getting any cheaper, as the cost of shiping is rising. How do you stay afloat?
What about the cosumer? What do you do? Do you have a plan to cut down on your spending? Or are you just too well off to even feel the economic heat? I know that I am trying to eliminate uneeded gadgets that are/will be running in my reef system. So lets hear it from you…..

Excellent topic. I personally have not been through an economic downturn in my working career but it’s silly to think it will never happen. I used to spend money flippantly on coral, products, and gadgets for my reef setup. I highly doubt that will continue. If there was a bright side to all of this it is that I now ponder much more and spend much less.
This is the time to support the businesses that have stuck by you when you needed them, if you can.
Again, excellent topic.
… wait till Ontario uses smart metering, then we will all turn our lights on at 10pm and turn it off at 8am to save on electricity.
I actually can’t wait for that as the rates will be like 2-3 cents per kW, as supposed to 6 cents.
that’s just their marketing speculations. They are saying 8 cents peak hour, 3 cents low hours. By the time it happens, it will turned into 10-12 cents peak, 5-6 cents low hours.
You don’t think that implementing smart metering is free
And think about your return pump, water movements, skimmers, there are many items that you cannot turn off at all in our tanks, they run 7/24
