Filter Socks: Good Things Gone Bad

Just because everyone uses them, doesn’t mean they are great! Why? Here is the devils advocate’s perspective.

 


For the most part, these socks have to be cleaned regularly. And by that I mean once every two weeks, for it to function optimally. Ask yourself, are you that diligent to wash them every two weeks for 5-6 years? I know that I am not.

So what is the end result of your negligence? A nitrate and detritus factory. Two byproducts that will have negatively impacted your tank’s parameters unless taken care of bi-weekly. Care to know more why I don’t like them?

How about the fact because it is 100 or less microns, it captures almost all particles, including beneficial flora. Then when you change your sock, you remove all that is good (with the bad) leaving a drained tank (pardon the pun). Might as well use tap water for your change water then…

For what is intended, removing bubbles and trapping some detritus, I think I will stick to natural removal of waste and bubbles.
