The Vietnamese government has stopped issuing CITES permits on clams last week, meanin there won’t be any more clams coming from Vietnam in about six months.

It’s a developing story, but the reason for the ban is:

I’m hearing that the ban took place because of too much clams being exported.  The Vietnamese government seems to be undecided on a lot of the issues.  Such as before, there were talk of issuing hard coral cites but never came about.

I remember the first clam shipment in the GTA about a year ago and I was underwhelmed by the selection, so I don’t think this ban will have the same effect as the Tonga coral ban (which has since been lifted).  The gouging that took place immediately after the ban was announced was embarrassing for the industry.

No resource should be overfished, so I’d say this is a good time to set up a clam farm in Vietnam to promote a sustainable harvest.
