Who says you can’t learn anything from watching television. Tell your mom that she is antiquated after seeing this. Discovery channel had always set the bar for educational shows, but today it blew me away. Folks, I highly recommend that you go to your nearest Future Shop, or Best Buy and purchase a HD TV (Plasma or LCD are your choices). Then call your friendly local supplier of HD programming, and beg.. I mean that, beg for Discovery HD. Because today was a day that all people in this hobby should have been in front of their nice big HDTV.
The discovery HD channel features a series called: “Equator”; which encompasses a range of topics that illustrate the need for change in our environmental conservation. Today, they ran an episode called: “Reef of Riches”. Their websites’ synopsis reads:
The Indo Pacific region is home to an exuberant abundance of life. On the coral reef, every animal is an example of evolution in action. New species emerge, explained by radical and intriguing theories. Sexual selection, a tumultuous glacial history and hothouse living conditions are all-powerful forces shaping life in this region.
The episode focuses on Raja Ampat, a set of islands in the Indonesia (specifically in the New Guinea). This group of islands has the most diverse group of corals in the world, as it is extremely remote to human kind. They go into detail on the constitution of the SPS coral, its predation, and its growth. They also touched on its reproduction and how they could sexually cross breed producing super species.
This episode tackled ideas that even hobby novices could grasp. It was amazingly narrated and beautifully captured in HD. I highly recommend that you contact the channel’s team and request that this series is out on Blu Ray.

I hope they do release that on DVD (sorry, blu-ray). I’m always looking for a good reef documentary. To watch something like that in HD is a real special treat.
Every person should see this episode, and especially this series. Discovery is by far the best channel on any cable network.
