I added a seagrass wrasse (Novaculichthys macrolepidotus) to my tank recently. He’s living in my frag tank as an experiment to see if he’ll take care of a recent invasion of redbugs. It swam around the perimeter of my tank for the first day or so and picked at the rocks. You could already tell he had a cool personality.

The next day he disappeared. I searched under the tank, thinking he jumped out. I turned over a few rocks. Nothing.

A couple of days passed by and he still hadn’t shown up. I figured it had crawled under some rock and died. I was ready to call my LFS and ask them to order me a new one. Since I usually have good luck with fish, I was understandably disappointed.

I happened to look at my frag tank yesterday and saw something green poking out of the sand. It was the wrasses’ head. I peered closer already picturing having to retrieve a fish head from my tank and I saw its eye move. It was alive! The wrasse was submerged in the sand with only its head exposed. It was surveying its new surroundings and gaging the environment.

Here’s a picture (click for zoomy goodness):

We stared at each other for a for a minute then he disappeared back under the sand.

So, to make an awkward analogy, it’s what I’m doing with this blog. I’m poking my head out of the sand and I’m checking out the environment. It’s been a long time since I’ve written a blog and I’m excited and terrified at the same time.

The more techie people in the audience will have noticed that the domain name you’re reading this at is blog.fragd.it, implying that there’s going to be something else at www.fragd.it (if you haven’t gotten the domain name, try saying it out loud). I have big plans for this site and they’ll be slowly revealed as they’re completed. In the meantime, enjoy the blog!
